Project ideas for the Breadth section of the AP studio art 2d design portfolio.

1. Research the style and intentions of another artist with specific consideration of how the artist used the elements and principles of art. Try to create a piece in the same style.

2. Redesign an old masterpiece in a new an innovative way (Individuality)

3. Do a self-portrait, or several different ones, that expresses a specific mood or emotion. Consider the psychological aspects of color. (Color, texture, emphasis and proportion)

4. Do some exploration with actual texture. Do a piece (portrait, self-portrait, landscape, or still life) in which the texture is the main focus. (Actual texture)

5. Go outside and paint a landscape. Choose an average view. (Space, Shape, Form, Color)

6. Do a self-portrait or a still life, using a specific color scheme. (Color)

7. On a 12” X 16” piece of board, compose a pile of interesting junk and then render it as a painting. Try to create a sense of unity among the pieces. (Unity and composition)

8. Do a painting of an alien cityscape. Keep in mind rules of one-, two-, and three-point perspective. (Depth and spatial illusion)

9. Divide a page, canvas, board into three equal spaces. Do three views of the same object. (Shape, form and unity)

10. Do a graphite drawing of a still-life arrangement that consists of reflective or clear objects—your goal is to convey the illusion of the objects texture. (Implied texture)

11. Do a drawing of an unusual interior—for instance, looking inside a closet, cabinet, refrigerator, inside your car... use your imagination!  (Space)

12. Do a realistic drawing of your hands arranged in a variety of poses. You must carefully plan your composition in order for the separate units to work together visually. (Value, unity)

13. Do a figure drawing from a live model. Try to create a sense of life and movement. (Gesture, line, shape, balance, proportion)

14. Do a painting from a live model.  Try to create a sense of life and movement.  (Color, value, shape, space, balance, proportion)

15. Choose an uninteresting subject and render it in a way that makes the subject seem special. (Form, emphasis)
