* One Semester class = about 4 hrs per week for 18 weeks
In the Advanced Art class, students are asked address light and shade, line quality, rendering of form, composition, surface manipulation, and illusion of depth. Drawings can be abstract, observational, or inventive. students may also address all of the elements and principles of design through a variety of painting mediums.
Grading
In terms of grading, students complete a series of 5 concentrated and in-depth studies in different design concepts. These projects must be teacher approved and they must adequately reflect the time spent on the project.
3 of 5 projects must be selected from the following list:
1. Still Life
2. Morphed Portrait
3. Figurative studies (counts as one piece) : Ten 5 minute drawings, two 15-20 minute drawing, two 40 minute drawing.
4. Historical copy
5. In depth Color study. Color scheme must be specific and purposeful and pre-approved
6. Contour line drawing in pen and ink
7. Independent 10 hour study in new medium
I will regularly discuss the student’s progress with them. Each student must show me his/her work and briefly discuss their intent. I will provide positive feedback based on the principles and elements of art introduced in the beginning classes.
Students must submit one piece before each grading period (approximately every 2 ˝ weeks) , and one additional piece before the end of the semester
Before each grading period, students will use my feedback and a Scoring Guideline posted in the class to score each piece they have completed: 4 (excellent) 3 (good) 2(moderate) 1 (weak)
4 points: will be given to studies demonstrating exceptional
work. The study shows that the student used their time to fully explore the
design concept. The work shows that the student used the medium proficiently
and that the student has a good understanding of the concept.
3 points: will be given to students who demonstrated a good
effort at exploring the concept. The
student addressed the design concept and used the medium adequately.
2 points: will be given to students who addressed the design
concept. The work shows that the student made a good effort to use the medium
effectively.
1 points: will be given to students who completed a study. Concept shown in the work only partially
matches the design concept attempted and the student did not use the medium
effectively.
Students taking advanced art for more than one period
a day, must complete the requirements for each period.
Copyright
Students may use published images of art to study the techniques and styles of accomplished artists. However, Copyright issues are discussed with the students early on—they are made aware of the legal issues involved with working from someone’s published work. In this course students will be encouraged to work from direct observation or from their own photographs. If the students do use a published image, it should be significantly altered to express the student’s creative solution to a problem, or, if it is used as a reference, it should only represent a small component of their entire creation.
